History

Before 1999, to meet the needs of an expanding housing estate of Sembawang, it was necessary to build a new school. The result was Sembawang Secondary School, built on 3.04 hectares of land at the bend of Sembawang Crescent in the midst of new HDB flats and amenities.

The school went through its first nine months without the benefits of full secondary school facilities. Housed temporarily at Woodlands Ring Secondary School while the construction of the new premises was underway, the pioneering secondary batch was eight Secondary 1 classes and seventeen teachers led by the school's first principal, Mrs Tang-Chan Yueh Tarn.

In January 2000, the school played host to Canberra Secondary School for six months before the latter moved on to their new premises at 51, Sembawang Drive.

In 2008 the school celebrates it's tenth anniversary. The guest of honour Dr Lim Wee Kiak unveiled a sculpture which was erected at the entrance to the foyer.

In December 2010, the second principal Mrs Elsie Rajaratnam was transferred to Kuo Chuan Presbyterian school while the third principal, Mrs/Mdm Tan Lay Hong took over her position. In addition, a second Vice-Principal has been added to the school's staff who is Mrs Lim-Neo Lay Pin.

School song

Chorus

Strive, Serve and Soar
As we march on with highest endeavour
Striding forward heads held high
Sembawang forever
A pillar of strength in the north
Great seat of knowledge and learning
We give our very best with energy and zest
Staunch hearts within each are burning
To see our school strong and recognised
As the nation's pride and joy
It's the fervent affirmation in each of us
Every teacher, girl and boy
Chorus

A blazing torch held aloft
Warm flame of friendship and caring
Lights every joyful day in duties, work and play
High hopes with each we are sharing
To comfort those who are suffering
As we spread abroad life's love
With such strength and dedication in all of us
Alma Mater soars above
Chorus

Sembawang forever
